LV by the Pool: Listing Top 3 Cultural Louis Vuitton Moments

Founded in 1854, Louis Vuitton established his namesake brand in Paris, specializing in high-quality travel trunks and luggage. They have since diversified into other clothing wears and fashion accessories, cementing themselves as a luxury fashion… ‘the luxury fashion house’. With the release of the “LV by the Pool” Look Book, we decided to go down memory lane and draw attention to notable Louis Vuitton moments and similarities in style and reveries.

Kanye West “Louis Vuitton Don”
Nicknamed the Louis Vuitton Don, Kanye West’s College-themed albums through 2005 – 2008 was a turning point for hip hop as a music genre, and it also marked a return of relevance for the Louis Vuitton brand as a cultural fashion brand. At the time it wasn’t strange for him to be seen wearing the brand’s collectibles from head to toe and was once lobbying for the Creative Director role at the fashion house. While this didn’t happen, and Kanye’s Yeezy went on to change culture in a different story, his last seen appearance with Louis Vuitton was in 2018 in a selfie with then wife, Kim Karadashian. They were both wearing multi-million priced Louis Vuitton shades.

Virgil Abloh as Creative Director
In March 2018, Virgil Abloh was appointed as the Men’s Artistic Director of Louis Vuitton, making history as the first African-American to hold such a prominent position at the fashion house. Abloh’s debut collection for Louis Vuitton was showcased during Paris Fashion Week in June 2018. The collection, titled “We Are the World,” received widespread acclaim for its youthful energy, diverse cast of models, and fusion of streetwear aesthetics with luxury craftsmanship. Since then, Virgil has blurred the lines between streetwear and high fashion with season after season of ingenious collaborations with Supreme, Takashi Murakami and Nigo.

It is no surprise that after Virgil’s passing, another iconic hiphop artiste Pharrell Williams, was handpicked to be Creative Director of menswear 2023 at Louis Vuitton. With his recent showcase receiving rave reviews from fashion heads worldwide.

Wes Anderson, Darjeeling Limited
Filmmaker Wes Anderson has long been an iconic auteur, romanticising american culture visually, yet tackling themes that seem to bog down its daily living. The symmetry, cinematography, and colour combination in his films make them the perfect fashion-adjacent works of art in film. This is why it is no surprise that Darjeeling Limited; his movie about spirituality, finding oneself and India featured a memorable Louis Vuitton bag set specially designed for the appearance. Together with Marc Jacobs, the Artistic Director of Louis Vuitton at the time– Wes studied firm archives and historical luggage to come up with the design for an authentic calf-leather suitcase which plays a role in the action.

Over a decade after the film’s release, the bag was sold quietly in a private auction.
